Disappointed

I am thoroughly disappointed. PBS pulled the Postcards from Buster episode that had the lesbian family in it. I heard the clip on cbc and it wasn’t even remotely something that should be of concern (not that I would be concerned anyway). Buster meets a girl and she has 2 moms, he comments, “wow, that’s a lot of moms” and that’s it. Yet, the new secretary of Education had it pulled.

And on a similar vein, I heard the ludicrous comments this week by Stephen Harper that they are concerned that legislating gay marriage could lead to legislating polygamy.

All of this arguing over gay marriage frustrates me. If the churches don’t want to marry gay couples, then fine, let it be that way there, but I think it should stop at that point. It needs to be recognized legally and there are churches, ie. unitarian, etc. that will marry gay couples and of course the justice of the peace.
A lot of people are hung up over the word marriage, that it means union between man and woman. But it’s a word and words change and take on meaning as times change. It used to be that when books said “men” it was referring to both men and women. That style of writing isn’t used anymore for obvious reasons. As a society we define what words mean and how they are used. Look at advertising for instance, we say we need a kleenex to wipe our nose, even if we’re using another brand. Kleenex has become synonymous with tissue, kraft dinner with macaroni, etc. So, marriage can and does mean union between two people in our society now.

Enough rambling on that for now, stepping off my soapbox.

I took Alec to the hospital last night, and he has a sinus infection. He’s on antibiotics now. Hopefully he’ll start feeling better soon.
