This week we met with the district psychologist, the principal and Alec’s teacher. The meeting went very well over all. Mostly because I felt the psychologist was very perceptive. Her assessement of Alec’s behaviour was very accurate considering the little amount of time she spent with him. In fact she pegged him quicker than his teacher had in the amount of time she has been teaching him. In some ways it is frustrating because we are starting to learn that we really are dealing with something but at the same time, it’s liberating because we may be able to do more. It’s looking more and more like Alec really does have Asperger’s Syndrome. She said much of his behaviour was characteristic of it but she also said that there were somethings that didn’t. (Much like the conclusion I had already come to a long time ago). She did an IQ test (WISC-IV) and she said that he is gifted (something else we had figured for a long time too). So, not only does he have trouble relating to his peers socially, he also has trouble relating to them in his interests, etc. She has recommended that Alec have some OT for his fine and gross motor skills. She’s also recommended that he have some enrichment programs and that he be buddied up with an older student that may be able to help him with some social skills and also act as a mentor. Next week, we see a pediatrician for further testing on the Aspergers. The ADD results have come back negative although he did say that if Alec’s IQ was above average the results may be skewed, so it will be a matter of isolating all these variable. But at least we’re making some progress and that’s a good thing.
