Friday night movie - warning spoiler ahead

Last night I watched “An American Haunting”. I knew in the first few minutes of the show (the scene where the mother, Lucy, hears a noise, gets up to investigate and stumbles into her husband John also “checking out the noise”.) In that moment I knew the whole premise.

spoiler - don’t read if you haven’t watched it and you don’t want it messed up;)

At that moment I knew John out of anger of seeing his daughter flirt at the dance with the teacher, had sexually molested his daughter. Then the first time there was a scene with the supernatural, I knew that a poltergeist had manifested from Betsy in response to the rape. Then you know when the bag of clothes come home with Betsy’s blood and John’s cothes, that you are right. Which really made for a crappy movie as I just waited for the movie to be over to confirm my guess. It was a strange blend of horror (which wasn’t really scary) and an attempt at a psychological drama. And I think because they attempted to do both, they actually failed at both of them, alienating horror fans and boring drama fans. And the media snippets about the only true documented ghost story related to the Bell Witch, didn’t seem to really fit with the premise of the story.

Those of you who have watched it, what did you think?
