Marketing to Woman Voters yet again

If you remember with the recent NB election, I discussed how I felt that politicians were not tapping into a huge voter potential - women. And of course with recent issues in the news like the Peter MacKay dog issue hasn’t helped matters either.

The US recognizes there is a problem. They are actively trying to change this through Women’s Voices, Women’s Vote. They have created some great videos to reach out to women voters. I’ve included an example of one here. Or you can go to the Women’s Voices, Women’s Vote website to see it and others.

Lisa Stone on blogher has a great post about this.

Why, then, if we’re running our own lives, paying for our own healthcare and taxes and seriously worrying about our retirements, did 20 million single women stay away from the polls in 2004?”

When are we in Canada going to start recognizing that women could have a HUGE influence over what happens in the polls? When are politicians going to recognize that they are not tapping the full potential of this market?

It seems to me that womens issues are more about money in the US, than in Canada. I don’t think this is a lead we want to follow.

I agree Scott. I wouldn’t want us to go that route either. I’m talking about reaching out to women to make women want to get involved and vote. I’m talking about how they talk to women and about how the political system involves women. In Canada we don’t reach out to women in campaigns the way we could. Even something as simple as that youtube ad above, take out the actresses, stick in regular people and it still works. It connects to women in a way that women like.

It never ceases to amaze me that women don’t vote. We’re not that very far removed from a time when women were not ALLOWED to vote. That we treat this priviledge so cavalierly appalls me.
